Fundamental Movement Skills for Grade 5
1. Running
Running is a fundamental movement skill that involves moving quickly on foot. It requires coordination of the arms and legs to propel the body forward. Good running technique includes a balanced stride, proper arm swing, and efficient breathing.
Think of running as a smooth journey on a road. Each step is like a tire on a car, moving you forward. If the tires are aligned and the engine is running smoothly, the car moves efficiently. Similarly, a balanced running stride ensures you cover ground quickly and with minimal effort.
2. Jumping
Jumping is a skill that involves propelling the body off the ground. It can be done from a standstill (standing jump) or with a run-up (hop, skip, or leap). Proper jumping technique includes bending the knees, using arm swing for momentum, and landing softly on the balls of the feet.
Imagine jumping as launching a rocket. The initial crouch is like the rocket's engines igniting, building power. The upward thrust is like the rocket taking off, and the controlled descent is like the rocket re-entering the atmosphere. Each part of the jump needs to be executed smoothly for maximum height and distance.
3. Throwing
Throwing involves propelling an object through the air using the arm and shoulder muscles. Proper throwing technique includes a wind-up, a follow-through, and a balanced body position. The most common throwing methods are overhand and underhand.
Think of throwing as releasing a bowstring. The wind-up is like drawing the bow, storing energy. The release is like letting go of the string, transferring that energy into the arrow. The follow-through is like the bow's natural recoil, ensuring the arrow flies straight and true. In throwing, the wind-up and follow-through help guide the object accurately.
