1.3 Project Management Knowledge Areas - Project Management Knowledge Areas
1. Integration Management
Integration Management involves the processes required to ensure that the various elements of the project are properly coordinated. This includes developing the project charter, creating the project management plan, directing and managing project execution, and monitoring and controlling project work.
Example: In a large construction project, Integration Management ensures that the architectural design, engineering specifications, and construction schedules are all aligned. If one aspect changes, such as a delay in material delivery, the project manager must integrate this change into the overall plan to avoid disruptions.
2. Scope Management
Scope Management focuses on defining and controlling what is included and what is not included in the project. It involves processes like planning the scope, collecting requirements, defining the scope, creating the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), and controlling the scope.
Example: For a software development project, Scope Management ensures that the team understands the exact features to be developed. If a client requests additional features mid-project, the project manager must assess whether these fall within the original scope or require a change request.
3. Time Management
Time Management involves the processes required to manage the timely completion of the project. This includes activities like defining the activities, sequencing the activities, estimating activity resources, estimating activity durations, developing the schedule, and controlling the schedule.
Example: In a product launch project, Time Management ensures that all marketing, production, and distribution activities are scheduled to meet the launch date. If a key supplier delays, the project manager must adjust the schedule to keep the launch on track.
